Building a SaaS From Zero: How MindGraph Went From Side Project to Registered NZ Company

> THE PROBLEM
Businesses hire on CVs and gut feel, then discover the team chemistry problems later. Personality frameworks like Big Five and Enneagram hold real signal, but they live in academic PDFs and one-off quizzes that never translate into hiring or management decisions.
We wanted a platform that turns assessments into something a manager can act on: team dashboards, compatibility analysis, coaching tips, and hiring blueprints. And we wanted to prove, with our own money and time, that we can take a product from idea to paying customers.
The technical challenge: complex quiz scoring logic, team-level analytics, organisation and role management, and subscription billing, all fast enough to feel consumer-grade and content-rich enough to rank against established competitors.
> WHAT WE BUILT
We built MindGraph as a React 18 + TypeScript app on Supabase (PostgreSQL with row-level security), with Stripe subscriptions and premium report purchases, Netlify Functions for the backend, and SendGrid for transactional email.
The platform ships 8+ psychology-backed assessments (Enneagram, Big Five, EQ, Love Languages, RIASEC, and more) with a custom quiz engine, visual result charts, compatibility calculators, and compare tools. Organisations get team dashboards with coaching tips and hiring blueprints, plus role-based access.
Content and FAQ structure were designed for search from day one, targeting featured-answer queries around each framework. MindGraph is now a registered New Zealand company with live payments, and it powers the personality Snapshot tool we built into the CRE8 Collective site.

We use our own products in client work. MindGraph isn’t a portfolio piece. It’s a running business. When CRE8 Collective needed a personality profiler, we powered it with MindGraph instead of building from scratch.
